Owen Frager Takes a Stab at Blackmail
August 11, 2008

Allow me to set the scene:

My daughter Sondra is a part-time domainer. That’s Internet jargon for someone who buys and sells domain names. She couldn’t afford to buy all the new names she dreamed up, so she started sending lists of her unused names to other domainer blog sites in case they might be interested in acquiring those names.

Imagine her surprise on August 6, when she received the following email from gfrager@aol.com. This is verbatim:

“If you want to promote yourself on my site, buy an AD - otherwise stop because I am on the verge of writing a review on this business - and I know about the man behind the curtain.”

Cryptic to say the least. It’s just the two of us and a Budgie in our house. I checked behind all the curtains and there was nobody there. The interesting fact is that none of Sondra’s messages to this particular blog ever got posted. The operator of the blog blocked them from being published. Sondra’s feelings were a bit hurt. She stopped posting to other domainer blogs and started her own at http://domain-name-brain.blogspot.com (a free online service from Google).

Sondra uses her new blog for the same purpose as before; listing available domain names people might be interested in buying. And yes, she does list for sale a few domains she herself owns.

OK, the scene is set. Today, Sondra received this email from owen@frager.us (again, verbatim):

“What Chutzpah. You have 10 hours to comply. You don’t want to mess with this mind.”
“[The Frager Factor] Sondra Wants To Get Sued (.com)”
“Sondra, you are unbelievable. Before you see the power of someone who who knows how to use Google to ensure your reputation will be such that NO ONE will ever do business with you, or WORSE understand what happens to your assets when the full power of a major corporation legal team sets their sights on you, REMOVE all references to me, my domains, my trademarks from any and all of your online properties.”

The email continues:

“btw, We believe Sondra is an agent of a major domain registrar. So BP, consider this a warning that if Sondra doesn’t stop... we will expose the dark dirty domain secrets that no one, especially the mothers of some young people in Arizona, want known.”

The identical text and blackmail threats appeared online at fragerfactor.blogspot.com. That is the site visitors are automatically directed to if they go to fragerfactor.com. The registered owner of fragerfactor.com is (go figure) Owen Frager. Did you ever hear of him? Neither have we.

Yes, Sondra does have a few complimentary links to fragerfactor.blogspot.com in her older blogs because she references that site as having inspired some of her creative domain names. As for the reference to trademarks or “me” (whoever that is); we’re in the dark.

This would be humorous if Owen Frager had not crossed the criminal line with a public blackmail threat against not only my daughter, but also “BP.” Do we know who “BP” might be? Here’s an educated guess. Sondra is an officer in a corporation that has affiliate status with GoDaddy.com. That means her corporation receives a small commission whenever somebody buys a domain name from the corporation, because the transaction itself is actually processed by GoDaddy.com as the registrar. Considering this very common type of business relationship (God help us, Sondra is an Amazon.com affiliate too), the mystery person with initials BP can only be Bob Parsons, owner of GoDaddy.com. I could be wrong, but the circumstantial evidence is quite compelling.

Will Sondra change her blog site? Not likely. She believes in freedom of speech and declines to humor a blatant Internet bully. For the record Mr. Owen Frager; blackmail is against the law. Although I can not possibly speak for Mr. Parsons, I am sure he will take a dim view of your blackmail threats related to the mothers in Arizona, and I’m guessing your legal assets would pale in comparison to his. I’ll make sure he receives a copy of your blackmail threat. Criticism is one thing; blackmail is another. For my part, I would appreciate knowing who is hiding in my house. I could use the rent.

Why am I telling this story at leonblog.com? Call it my civic duty to report criminal activity originating from fragerfactor.blogspot.com and owen@frager.us. I am writing this as a sort of post-viewing review of the Frager site after visiting there to look for trademarks Sondra might have infringed. I assure everyone that if Sondra had inadvertently or accidentally violated any trademark or other laws (or commonly accepted Internet ethics), her entire blog site would be gone, with a sincere private apology to Mr. Frager.

In this case however, Mr. Frager is not only entirely out of line but also engaged in criminal activity. I wonder how his alleged clients will view his behavior in this matter? Good corporations and other businesses don’t normally allow themselves to be associated with contractors or consultants who might generate bad publicity for the organization.

But watch out... Owen Frager’s site claims “TFF is linked-in to over 10,000 thought leaders in 32 countries including 4 heads of state, 28 members of the US Congress, 178 of the Fortune 500 CEOs, 8 billionaires, 4 media moguls, professors at 30 universities around the world, and now... you!”

Are we impressed, or what? I suppose with all that power his next move will be to come after me. Anyone interested in donating to Sondra’s (or my) legal defense fund can contact us for details.

On the lighter side, Sondra worked very hard to come up with the following domain names related to these events and inspired by both Owen Frager and his free blog site at Google. At the time I wrote this blog, these domain names were all available. If you purchase any of them, please let me know so I can have a little chuckle. If you don’t have a registrar to work with, you can use our service at showtheworld.com. If you want a really appropriate name, you can buy one we already own; webcrooks.com, 50% off the listed price if you mention this blog.
