McCain Fails The “Honor” Test
April 14, 2007
At an April 11 speech to Virginia Military Institute cadets,
Arizona Senator John Sidney McCain III said, “I know that
seated in the front of this hall are VMI cadets who have
served in Iraq. I am grateful for your service, honored by
your presence, and mindful that I speak to an audience that
can discern truth from falsehood in a politician’s appraisal
of the war.”
McCain then launched into a politically motivated,
misleading and shameful characterization of the war in Iraq
that also included a delusional list of justifications for
continued sacrifice of American lives to support a U.S.
invasion and occupation that never had a valid justification
to begin with.
Apparently McCain believes VMI cadets are isolated,
generally misinformed and at best, stupid. I feel compelled
to apologize to the cadets at VMI for McCain’s disrespectful
behavior and words. It stretches credulity that McCain
aspires to be our next president.
McCain attempted to portray a positive effect of the recent
“surge” of troops in Iraq, while at the same time admitting
Bush’s strategies prior to the “surge” were all for naught.
I interpret that to mean we sacrificed more than 3,000
American lives for naught. Oh well, 3,000 dead; just send in
more combat brigades under a new presidential scapegoat
named Petraeus, who McCain believes will become the surprise
savior of the Middle East.
McCain even suggested the sacrifice of additional American
lives while the U.S. public waits patiently for several
months to see if General Patraeus actually knows what he’s
doing. If you heard excerpts of Patraeus’s congressional
interviews prior to his current assignment, I can understand
why you might believe that is cause for widespread panic and
disillusionment.
I guess American life is cheap where McCain is concerned. He
seems perfectly willing to send thousands of American
soldiers to their deaths in Iraq so Iraqi citizens can share
in their country’s oil revenues. Maybe I forgot to submit my
application, but I never heard of any Americans sharing in
U.S. oil revenues (except stockholders). Our soldiers are
dying to provide something for Iraqis our soldiers
themselves don’t receive from their own country. That is
nothing short of wretchedly sick.
McCain is obsessively concerned with a potential genocide in
Iraq brought about by Sunni and Shi’ite religious conflicts,
but wholly unconcerned about the number of American lives it
is taking to postpone the inevitable. Sooner or later, the
Sunnis and Shi’ites will fight it out anyway. We don’t need
to be caught in the middle and Al Qaida doesn’t need Iraq
for an operational base, they already have Pakistan.
I think McCain should be more concerned about the massive
presence of Al Qaida in Pakistan, a country that possesses
nuclear weapons. There is no logical reason Al Qaida would
want Iraq when they already have free reign in Pakistan and
various territories on the African continent. McCain needs
to read the major newspapers a bit more frequently.
For the record, I think McCain is probably a “nice” guy.
He’s experienced some remarkably tough and trying periods
during his life and to his credit; did serve his country in
the military (unlike most of the other prospectors for the
presidential throne). But that doesn’t qualify him to be
president. McCain has a problem with the concept of “honor.”
McCain said in his speech, “But having been a critic of the
way this war was fought and a proponent of the very strategy
now being followed, it is my obligation to encourage
Americans to give it a chance to succeed. To do otherwise
would be contrary to the interests of my country, and
dishonorable.”
Lets talk about honor. Lets talk about a man who committed
adultery behind his injured wife’s back. Lets talk about
McCain’s relationship with Keating during the savings and
loan scandal. Lets talk about the outright lies McCain
circulated about security in Iraq. Lets talk about Chelsea .
. . no, wait, McCain may have been correct on that one. Lets
talk about the way McCain hypocritically abandoned the term
“gook,” for reasons of political expediency, and lets talk
about the “boobs” in congress (McCain’s term, not mine).
Having McCain lecture about "honor" is like hiring Clinton
to teach classes on cigar etiquette. And electing McCain as
president would be disastrous for the United States. Heck,
McCain couldn’t even beat George Bush in 2000. The only
thing worse than losing to Bush would have to be losing to a
deceased candidate.
All things considered, the 2008 election has the potential
to establish a unique entry in the Guinness Book of Records.
If McCain wins (LOL), he would become the oldest man to ever
ascend to presidential office in the U.S. following an
election. He would also become the first U.S. president to
have been born outside of the U.S. If Hilary wins, she will
become our first female president. If Obama wins, he will
become our first black president (as far as we know).
Right now, given these three candidates and applying the
least of all evils approach, the record book entry will
probably go to the first female president. McCain cares too
little about what Americans want or what the country needs.
Obama’s chances will be sabotaged by Al Sharpton and a horde
of “experts” on racism from the 60s and 70s who seem
determined to convince us all that Obama can not win because
racist whites won’t vote for him.
Sorry McCain, nobody has taken you seriously since you
entered the “burned out” phase of your political career.
That is probably why you chose VMI to give your speech. The
cadets had no choice about being there and certainly
couldn’t “boo” or otherwise demonstrate their displeasure
with your hypocrisy.
If you believe so strongly in the sacrifice of American
lives for Iraqi oil, why don’t you procure a good rifle, go
to Iraq and voluntarily join an Iraqi military unit.
