Al Sharpton Urinates on U.S. Constitution
April 10, 2007
Sorry, but I’ve never heard of Don Imus. At least not until
yesterday when a radio show confrontation between Imus and
Al Sharpton made the news. Sharpton has goofed and
transformed Imus into a nationally-known celebrity.
During his radio show on Wednesday, Imus referred to members
of the Rutgers female basketball team as “nappy-headed hos.”
I’m not quite sure which part of the characterization
offended Sharpton; the “nappy-headed” part or the “hos”
part.
I suspect it was the “nappy-headed” part because Sharpton
wants Imus fired for his comments but has not called for
occupational termination of Bernard McGuirk, the show’s
producer, who also referred to the Rutgers women as “hos.”
I guess Sharpton accepts “hos” as a label for black women.
In that vein, he probably doesn’t have a problem referring
to women as “bitches” either. God forbid he alienate the few
rappers who have donated money to his miserably failed
campaigns to run for public office.
Imus apologized for his comments on Friday, explaining that
he was just trying to be funny. Word on the street is that
Imus has a history of questionable or controversial stabs
against racial and ethnic groups. Ironically, that appears
to be the very reason he is paid to be on the radio. His
listening audience likes his offensive style. If they
didn’t, they wouldn’t be tuning in.
Imus is now floundering in a sea of self-contrition while he
tries to save his reputation, his listeners, and his pay
check. The upshot of this behavior is a shameful slap in the
face of our colonial forefathers and indeed all American
soldiers who have died to protect our freedom of speech. We
do have freedom of speech in this country, don’t we?
Sharpton doesn’t seem to think we should.
Question, Al . . . where did the term “nappy-headed”
originate? Darned if the first time (and every time after
that) I’ve ever heard the term was from black comedians or
actors. What gives here? Are blacks permitted to use words,
phrases and stereotypes that other races are banned from
using? Where did that fantasy come from? What about the word
“nigger” Al? Have you listened to a rap song lately? For
that matter, have you demanded Chris Rock be fired?
Some people have odd priorities. Thousands of Americans dead
in Iraq and Al Sharpton claims to be offended by something a
stale cracker said on the radio. I’m sure Jesse Jackson will
be joining in on this fray sooner or later. He couldn’t
possibly sit idly by while Sharpton hogs the spotlight; or
shines it all on Imus. The NAACP even stated their opinion
on this incident but we can let that go since nobody takes
that organization seriously anyway, except the people who
work there.
OURS IS A FREE COUNTRY Sharpton; a country that stands for
FREE SPEECH, even from nappy-headed racists like you. I
don’t object to your bigoted opinion, but we certainly don’t
need you demanding someone be fired over something they
said. I never demanded you be fired for all of the stupid
things you’ve done and said in your life. It wouldn't
surprise me though if a majority of blacks in this country
do want you off the air because you constitute a public
embarrassment to them.
Our revered Constitution guarantees my freedom of speech,
and I enthusiastically cede that freedom to every other
American. Countless people have died to protect that right.
Sharpton and others like him apparently prefer us to forfeit
our freedom of speech if we’re not black.
Imus claims to have learned “...that you can't make fun of
everybody, because some people don't deserve it.” Jesus,
Imus. Yes you can. Have you ever watched Carlos Mencia on
television? Have you ever read any of my blogs? Do you watch
comedians on TV? Anyone and everyone is fair game. Just look
in the mirror. You’ll understand. People are too easily
offended and to that I say; “Go bury your heads in the sand
and let the rest of us enjoy life with a modicum of humor
but more importantly, honesty.”
For my part, I believe the “ho” label was somewhat
inappropriate because it is highly disrespectful to women
and I’ve always been on record as a staunch champion of
women. So if you were sincerely offended by what Imus said,
just stop listening to his show. If enough listeners abandon
the show, so too will the show’s advertisers and Imus’s
voice will be stilled by the principles of economics.
If you weren’t listening to the show, then what does it
matter to you? How could you be offended if you didn’t hear
it? Because Al Sharpton chose to make an issue of it? Stop
worrying about Al and start worrying about your son or
daughter being killed in Iraq for nothing. Now that’s
offensive.
