Happy Thanksgiving
November 23, 2006
A headline at CNN yesterday announced, “President Pardons
Turkey.” Sometimes it gets so busy at work I miss a
developing story. I had no idea Rumsfeld had already been
convicted of war crimes. Speaking of turkeys (Rumsfeld
aside), it’s that time of the year to reflect on the things
I have to be thankful for.
First and foremost, I am thankful I can actually afford a
turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. That logically translates
into being thankful for a capitalistic democracy that
provides financial rewards for people willing to work hard.
I am also thankful for the privilege of living in a country
that allows me freedom of speech, freedom of choice and
freedom of movement. So what if we have a few problems with
corrupt politicians; misguided and overaggressive foreign
policies; a history of spending more tax dollars for the
poor in developing countries than the poor in our own
country; and an unfair, over-bloated tax code? That didn’t
stop me from buying my Butterball turkey. To be sure, I
can’t afford an “open range turkey” this year, but maybe
next year if the Democrats don’t raise taxes.
I am most thankful though, for the lady in my life, my
extended family, my friends, and the occasional smile from a
stranger. Life may be tough at times but life is still good.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone I know; everyone reading this
message; and special thanks to all of our American troops
stationed throughout the far corners of the world fighting
to protect the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.
