Open Letter to the Democratic Party
November 22, 2006
Congratulations to you, the Democratic Party,
for this year’s gains in Congress. Now that you have a
legitimate chance to show the country what you’re made of,
there are a few important points you should burn directly
into the memory neurons of your collective brains:
You hold a majority in both houses of Congress because
dissatisfied and angry Republicans like me all over this
floundering country changed sides and voted "against" a
deluded Republican administration that has lost touch with
reality. We voted you in and we can just as easily vote you
out if you let us down.
I speak for the silent majority in this country (Democrat,
Republican and unaffiliated) and this is what we want from
our elected representatives:
- We want our troops OUT of Iraq. No
timetables, no lengthy drawdown and no more false
reports about progress in Baghdad. We have already
forfeited enough precious American lives for nothing.
This war is (and always was) pointless and impossible to
win on any level. Can you spell “Viet Nam?” Get us out
NOW. I don’t care how the world ends up judging us for a
withdrawal. I somehow suspect they will ultimately
congratulate us for finally seeing the light.
- Stop ranting and raving about free
healthcare for the poor and downtrodden, and start
working on free healthcare for “every” American citizen.
Get health care expenses under control; make it free for
everyone; and pay for it with money saved by extricating
our forces around the world engaged in expensive
military operations that accomplish essentially ...
nothing.
- Stand up for women’s rights and that
includes pro-choice. If the Republican Right Wing
sincerely believed a fetus is alive and entitled to
constitutional protection, a pregnant woman would be
entitled to a tax deduction for her unborn child.
- Get the illegal immigrants out of
this country. Implement and enforce “serious and
damaging” penalties on businesses or individuals that
employ them. I am tired of my tax dollars being used to
give illegal border crossers free-travel temporary home
leave whenever they allow themselves to be caught
because they need a vacation.
- Outlaw lobbies. Lobbies do not fairly
represent the citizens of this country. I have yet (in
my lifetime to date) to be contacted by a lobby desiring
to know what I want. We don’t need lobbies; corrupt
corporations need lobbies.
- Go for it with the minimum wage. That won’t work
though, while illegal immigrants can undercut that
standard. Businesses employing illegal immigrants are
not going to pay them minimum wage. Get real on this
one.
Pause ... Now that I’m started, it appears there are so many
important issues to be addressed it would be better if I
establish a separate document to list them all. Give me a
few days. In the meantime, those of you reading this blog
who feel I’ve missed an important issue, use my
contact form to
set me straight. If I agree with you, I’ll add it to the
list.
To conclude today’s blog, just remember, Democrats: We
Republicans gave you a majority not by staying home but by
going to the polls and voting for you. Don’t let us down. We
will vote you out.
